Subject:Give up gaming/larp?

Sometimes I consider giving it up. I cannot stand dealing with those who don't know the rules or who say something other than what the book says. Got one person trying to say you add weapon traits to initiative in WoD LARP. Bullshit. Total bullshit. IF that were true then everyone should use longbows because they give +6 traits. People without weapons could never go first much of the time. No. That's just stupid. We don't even do initiative. Everyone goes at the same time. So you can't really go before someone which I just dont like. I get in too many fights over rules and it gets ugly. So maybe gaming isn't for me. I like story but rules are really important to me.

Rules are important - they give a structure and in theory a framework so everyone knows who can do what.

The trouble I've found isn't that someone feels that rules are important - it's that they're obnoxious and arrogant about them and their application. Asking the ST to check up on a rule is one thing; especially if you have the relevant book. Arguing repeatedly when you've not got the book; or indeed there's a "plot" reason why X isn't working; disrupts the game for everyone and pisses people off. Bitching about how the rules "should have worked" or (my personal bugbear) stating catergorically that a rule works one way and refusing to back down even when someone holds the book in front of you; because your way's better for your character is a way to loose friends.

In other words - attitude is everything. Politeness wins all ties. If you're getting into fights then you need to stop, think a bit and ask yourself if you're the one being a douche here.

I have the book I have quoted it page, paragraph and sentence and they still try and say it works another way.

Politeness doesn't win all ties btw. Nor does rudness either. There is no win all ties with some gamers.

At which point you stop playing with them. I've got a number of people in the gaming group I belong to where I keep interaction to a minimum; because they bully and brow beat everyone.

Sounds like you're on the receiving end of that so I'd just stop playing with them.

Rules are important to the STs as well. Difference is not everyone agrees in their application. And for some, the rules are modified from what is in the rule booklet as well.

I've had people try to argue rules they claim are in the book and bend them to their idea of how they are interpreted, then claim them as 'fact'.

To me it's all in how a player handles the issue rather than the issue itself (in most cases). Unfortunately most of the time people take their ideas of the rules too personally and when you disagree with them they get offended. This goes both ways unfortunately as I've seen STs do it too. Suddenly its "you're protecting your wife's character" or "(insert sect) would never do that cause 'the book says so'" or "you're meta-gaming and killing my personal plotz!" etc etc.

And in most cases I write those people off. It's too hard to try and talk someone down from that cliff because in most cases they have already made up their minds and thats that.

Honestly if you can't talk to whomever you're having the problem with its probably best to just quietly bow out. Disagreements happen and that's totally ok. How you handle the disagreement is what will set you apart from all of the others and quite possibly leave a door open to future reconciliation.
